Zinfandel is a classic grape variety, commonly found in California. In this article, we are going to look at the characteristics of Zinfandel based on classic examples (see disclaimer below for more information of what is considered as classic), following a structure commonly used by wine institutions like Court of Master Sommeliers (COMS) and Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET). We will also look at how does it compare to other varieties and what makes it unique.

Disclaimer
The purpose of this “how to spot” series is to make blind tasting as accessible as possible by establishing a “baseline”, therefore examples and content are based on what is considered to be the most “classic”. For Zinfandel, majority of classics are at an entry level price point.
There are some outstanding Zinfandels that may not fit the profile mentioned above and there can be huge regional differences as well. Therefore, this is not an implication of all Zinfandels are the same.
